Resiliency
It’s not what you know; it’s what you do!
It is impossible to talk about drive without mentioning resiliency. To be resilient or to have resiliency, you must have internal drive to push through the chaos. When we work with companies, the word resilience comes up an awful lot. They say things like “We need to help our people become more resilient” or “We think our weakness is our lack of resiliency in our people.” What they are really saying is “We need our people to be able to adapt, recover, and act in a way that keeps us moving forward no matter what.”
The economy and market place have become extremely volatile and competitive. This has caused an increase in the need for organizations, teams, and leaders, to have more hustle, show a level of grit and resiliency, and have that inner hunger for success. We all need to have that positive attitude that gets us through obstacles and setbacks, yet only 17 percent of business leaders report being confident they have the right leadership capabilities to execute their strategy.
If you are looking to build a resilient culture, shift away from giving people only what they want and give them what they need. We know kids love to eat candy and stay up late, but these don’t help them do better in school or athletics. If we think about how we teach our kids, we can start to teach our people how to strive for the outcomes of the future.
Just because your kids don’t like eating fruits and vegetables, brushing their teeth, or going to bed early doesn’t mean these things won’t benefit them in the long run. With the talent shortage that many organizations have, we have noticed an urgency to attract the best talent. This urgency usually leads to the easy solution of giving people those external quick rewards that fail to build resilient and driven cultures.
Create a process that will attract the right talent and a process that will grow and keep the right talent. If you attract talent but can’t retain the talent, there is no way you can build a resilient culture.
